Tax Season 2019 commenced on 1 July for taxpayers using online filing whilst taxpayers who wish to file their income tax returns at a branch may do so from 1 August.
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is encouraging taxpayers to use the updated digital channels, eFiling and the SARS MobiApp. Taxpayers using these channels can file their income tax returns from 1 July to 4 December.
Taxpayers who want to file their income tax returns at a SARS branch may do so from 1 August until 31 October. This is a much shorter period than that allowed for taxpayers using the digital channels and according to SARS, this is done to improve service to taxpayers and encourage conversion to online filing.
The 10 following tips will help you to make tax season a breeze:
1. Not everyone has to file an income tax return
You do not need to submit a return if you meet all these requirements:
- Your total salary for the year before tax is not more than R500 000.
- You have only one employer.
- You have no car allowance/company car/travel allowance or other income (e.g. interest or rental income).
- You are not claiming tax related deductions/rebates (e.g. medical expenses; travel and retirement annuity contributions, other than pension contributions made by your employer).
Go to the SARS website and use the Tax Wizard to see if you need to submit an income tax return.
2. File on the go
SARS has improved its MobiApp for smartphones to make eFiling a breeze. Expert help is available online and it is simple to upload supporting documents.
3. Make sure you file in time
SARS will impose penalties if you file late or not at all. The penalty will apply for every month the return remains outstanding.
4. Make sure you have your PRN ready for payments
When paying SARS, you need to have your Payment Reference Number (PRN) handy. The PRN is on your Statement of Account.
5. Submit documents on time
If SARS requests specific supporting documents and it is not submitted within the time stipulated your assessment will be revised.
6. Use a professional if you need help
If you need help with your tax affairs, use a registered tax practitioner.
7. Peace of mind
Make sure that you complete your income tax return honestly, accurately and on time to ensure peace of mind.
8. Keep a logbook
If you receive a travel allowance or use a company car, then you must keep a logbook. Use the logbook to complete your income tax return.
9. Pay on time
In certain circumstances, SARS can reach an agreement with you to defer your tax debt for later payment or for payment by instalments.
10. Protect your tax information
Be aware of identity fraud and protect your username and password for eFiling and the SARS MobiApp.
